Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that we place atop damaged teeth to protect them, restore their size and shape, and improve their appearance. There are a number of different types of crowns, differing in materials, costs and procedures.

A typical crown procedure involves 2 office visits. The dentist will first prepare the tooth by removing any decay or large fillings, then take a mold of it to create the crown.

Porcelain

A porcelain crown is a tooth-shaped cap that your dentist places over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength and improve cosmetic appearance. The beauty of this material is that it closely resembles natural enamel, blending seamlessly with your existing teeth for an aesthetic finish.

Porcelain crowns are also stain-resistant, which means you can eat your favorite foods and drink without worrying about damaging the crown or the natural tooth underneath it. Porcelain is one of the most durable materials for dental restorations and, when properly cared for by your dentist, will last 10 years or more.

Unlike the metals used in other types of crowns, porcelain has a lower melting point and exhibits less shrinkage during casting, making it easier for dental laboratories to create crowns that closely match your tooth’s colour and optical quality. For this reason, porcelain crowns are the preferred option for a long-lasting and attractive dental restoration.

Porcelain is crafted to look and feel like the tooth that it covers, giving your smile a natural-looking appearance. Unlike other types of crowns, which are either opaque or shiny white, porcelain is translucent and can mimic the light-catching properties of a natural tooth. It’s also available in a wide range of shades, allowing us to find the perfect match for your smile.

Why You Might Need a Porcelain Crown

A porcelain crown is recommended when a damaged tooth requires more structural support than a traditional filling can provide. This could include a broken tooth, deep decay, fractured fillings, or a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment. In addition, porcelain crowns can be used to cover severely discolored or misshapen teeth.

These repairs and restorations will not only help improve the function of your teeth, but they will also boost your confidence when you smile. This is especially important for patients who have been dealing with issues like a chipped, cracked or missing tooth.

If left untreated, these problems can lead to more severe oral health complications such as infection and even tooth loss. Porcelain crowns will not only repair these damage but they can prevent further issues and improve the overall aesthetic of your smile.

The first step in the process is to prepare the tooth that will receive the crown. This involves taking x-rays and using a drill to remove any decayed or damaged areas. For front teeth, we may also file down the surface to ensure that the crown sits flush against your natural teeth for a seamless and comfortable fit.

The final step is to bond the crown onto the affected tooth or teeth, using special cement. For durability, we can opt to use a zirconia core-only crown or a porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crown, which consists of a tooth-colored porcelain layer baked on to a base metal core. We recommend the latter for out-of-sight molars, which undergo a greater amount of chewing pressure than other teeth and are more likely to show signs of wear. A reputable and experienced provider of porcelain crowns will be able to advise on the best option for you based on your unique needs and concerns.
